Antonio J. Forte, MD, PhD, is a consultant in the Division of Plastic Surgery, Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Florida, with joint appointments in the Department of Artificial Intelligence & Informatics, Department of Neurosurgery, and Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Forte serves as Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Surgery and as Medical Director of Digital Product Engineering in the Center for Digital Health. He also serves as the Terrance D. and Judith A. Paul Director of MayoExpert.
Dr. Forte joined Mayo Clinic in 2015 and holds the academic rank of Professor of Plastic Surgery and Professor of Biomedical Informatics, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He holds full faculty privileges in Biomedical Engineering and Physiology, Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Dr Forte serves as Vice Chair for Clinical Care Team Communications at the Mayo Clinic Clinical Practice Committee, and Chair of the subcommittee Transformative Innovation at the Florida Research Operations Management Team. He has received the Executive Certificate in Strategy and Innovation and the Executive Certificate in Technology and Operations from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management. Moreover, he has completed MIT's Advanced Certificate for Executives in Management, Innovation, and Technology (ACE). Dr Forte is also a Gerstner Scholar in AI Translation and a Richard M. Schulze Scholar in Artificial Intelligence.

Dr. Forte earned his MD, graduating magna cum laude, and his master’s in pharmacology, as well as his PhD, in Brazil. He completed a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, followed by a fellowship in hand and microsurgery at The Buncke Clinic in San Francisco, California. Dr. Forte is one of the principal investigators in the High Dimensional Phenotyping Laboratory, a skunkworks laboratory focused on leveraging continuous monitoring data from wearables and touchless sensors to identify digital fingerprint for pain and diseases.
He also leads the Surgery AI Laboratory, which investigates the development and deployment of virtual assistants using natural language processing, large language models and Agentic AI in clinical practice, as well as AI-augmented clinical decision systems. Dr Forte has over 300 publications in peer-reviewed journals and serves as a Medical Advisor for OpenEvidence.
